New and Young Player Briefings

We’re getting ready for Time In on Friday at 7pm and have a few final reminders for you.

As usual, there will be a New Player Briefing at 5pm on Friday. This will be located at the Teepee Glade (where you’d go for Monstering).

The New Player Briefing covers the basics of Curious Pastimes, including common calls you’ll hear in the game, a brief overview of the rules, and an introduction to the various teams that help run the game.

Please come along if you’re a new player, or just want a refresher on the game or rules.

We also hold Young Players Briefings, where we outline activities and encounters for Young People to get involved in over the weekend; this will be located at the Bar at 6pm on Friday.

We have put together a guide about what Young Players can do at our events: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18_L0_Y64NG7xeAtL4VFIzpzdn1e53KREe_Cx6Jx9Kc0/edit?usp=sharing

Curious Pastimes Parents (Unofficial) Facebook group is a place for parents/guardians to connect and for general discussions about Young Players at Curious Pastimes

We’re excited to see you all soon!

Monstering Timetable

Here is the monster timetable for Renewal.

There are no specific kit requirements for this event so please bring your basic kit and armour if you can.

Please check with your command team ahead of your faction slots if you would like to help with makeup, do specific non-combatant roles or have children who would like to join in. They will liaise with the Game Team to make sure there is something available for you where possible.

The volunteers slot during the battle is for any not taking part in the battle – there will be talky roles available during this time. Just come along to Ref HQ if you want to get involved.

Renewal Gate Opening Times

We wanted to share some information about arrivals, camping and parking, to help everyone get on site as smoothly as possible.

The Front Gate tent will be staffed at the following times:

  • Thursday 22nd August – 12pm-10pm
  • Friday 23rd August – 12pm-10pm

When you arrive on site, please keep an eye out for members of the Event Team, wearing a yellow hi vis, who will direct you to the right place to sign in, unload and park.

If you are arriving before 12pm, please wait with your vehicle until the gate opens.
If you arrive after 10pm, please go to Event HQ (marked on the map) upon arrival where you will be checked in and directed where to park.

If you are arriving:

  • Saturday 24th and  Sunday 25th August 9am-10pm,
  • Monday 26th August 9am-2pm

Please go to Event HQ where you will be checked in.

Please don’t arrive outside of these times unless you have arranged this in advance with Curious Pastimes.

The game area of the site will be open to traffic from 12pm-8pm on Thursday, and 12pm-6pm on Friday. We aim to allow traffic into the game area approximately 30 minutes after Time Out on Monday. Loading Passes can be obtained from your Faction Team on Monday to allow vehicle access to the game area – the Event Team will not grant vehicles access to faction camps without a Loading Pass.

The Car Park will be open at all times, if you are planning on leaving site regularly during the game (e.g. staying offsite), please let the Event Team know and they will help you find a suitable parking spot.
Unless instructed otherwise, please don’t leave your vehicle in the hardstanding area as this is for loading and unloading only.

Please be aware that sleeping tents are not allowed in the car parking field, and there is no vehicle access allowed to the Out of Character camping field, except site and emergency vehicles. This is for your safety and exceptions cannot be made.

Renewal Site Plan

Here is the site plan for Renewal.

Please note that we have limited space for unloading kit in the IC areas. We will be operating with unloading passes which will be provided by the Event team when you need to take your vehicle onto site.

If you have an unloading pass, please make sure you head straight to your IC area to unload you vehicle and return the pass as soon as possible. This will really help us to keep the queues down for other people needing to access site.

Paccar also have a number of hand carts that can be used to help you move smaller amounts of kit to your faction glade. If you borrow one, please make sure you return it.

SFX

Pyrotechnic special effects, including flashes, loud bangs, and smoke effects, will be in use at Renewal 2024, including at the ritual circle, during skirmishes and battles, and during the wider game.

Very loud effects will only be present during battles and skirmishes – these will not be used in camp areas.  However, due to their nature, they will still be audible across the wider site.

We will not use loud effects very late at night.

Anyone using pyrotechnics during a skirmish or battle will be wearing an orange hi visibility vest.

If you have questions regarding pyrotechnic use, please speak to a member of the SFX Team who can be contacted via the Event Team or Game Team.  While we do try our absolute best to be considerate of the needs of our players, due to the nature of our game it is not possible for the SFX Team to know where any given person is at any given time, and therefore we are unable to give advance warning to individuals before effects are used.

All pyrotechnic effects at Curious Pastimes come under the remit of the SFX Team, and may not be used by players without prior permission.  This includes anything that generates light, smoke and/or noise via chemical means that isn’t a standard fire.

Under no circumstances may any player use any pyrotechnic device that generates smoke or loud noise at Curious Pastimes events.  For any items that generate light through chemical means (e.g. glow sticks), are added to a fire (e.g. to change the flame colour) or generate small levels of noise please speak to a member of the SFX team for clearance before taking these into the IC area.  Any non-standard use of fire (e.g. large pyres, wickermen, fire poi etc) will also need clearing by the SFX team (ideally before the event) for safety purposes. If in doubt, please get in contact and the SFX team will see what can be done.

We will be holding a pyrotechnics briefing on Friday. This is aimed at those who may be feeling nervous or anxious about effects, or would like more information about what to expect.  We will be meeting in the Teepee glade at 4pm and will be holding the main briefing in Glade 24 on the battlefield starting from approximately 4.15pm.

Please be aware that this briefing will include the use of pyrotechnic effects, including loud bangs, and these may be heard across the wider site.

Accessible Camping

Due to limitations on power and space, we would request that anyone who needs accessible camping, is planning on bringing a caravan/caravan or similar, or requires power for medical reasons (e.g charging wheelchairs or powering CPAP machines) completes the below form.

Accessible camping is located on the edge of the out of character camping field, closest to the toilet block, Event HQ and IC areas.

We will be providing power to the accessible camping area and those sleeping in vehicles/caravans who require it for medical reasons.  We are also able to charge power packs, batteries and devices during the day, and will be able to provide fridge space for medications for those that require it.  Please speak to someone at Event HQ if you require either of these.

Completing this form does not reserve or guarantee you a space in these areas and is used as a guide for the Event Team for likely numbers and space requirements.

If you require vehicle access to the accessible camping area for set up or takedown, please let the Event Team know at the gate.

Please note that, for health and safety reasons, camping next to your vehicle is not permitted.

Bow Safety and Weapons Checking

Bow Safety.

Anyone who wishes to use a bow or crossbow of any description at Curious Pastimes must first take part in a Bow Safety Training session.

Bow Safety Training sessions will be held:

  • Thursday – 4:00pm
  • Friday – 3:00pm
  • Saturday – 10:00am
  • Sunday – 10:00am
  • Monday 10:00am

Those who completed a Bow Safety Training session at Renewal 2021 will be due to have their Licence renewed by the end of 2024.  We have organised some sessions specifically for those who already hold a Licence and need a recertification.  These sessions will be shorter than standard Bow Safety Training sessions, as everyone attending will have held a Bow Licence previously, but will have limited numbers per slot.

These sessions will be held:

  • Friday – 1:00pm and 2:00pm
  • Saturday – 10:00am
  • Sunday – 10:00am
  • Monday 10:00am

Please meet outside Event HQ (marked on the map) for any of these sessions.

Please let us know if you plan to attend one of the sessions by completing this form:

https://forms.gle/6fgTepgvPhXC8QZq6

If you pre-book for a session, your licence will be prepared ahead of time and your card will be ready to go on completion of the session.  If you have not pre-booked, your card may not be available until the following day.

If you lose your Bow Safety Licence, you will need to complete a full Bow Safety Session in order to get a replacement.  If you lose your Safe Bow Licence (the one attached directly to your bow with information about the poundage etc), please bring the bow to Event HQ during the event to get it re-checked and a new tag printed.

There is a Curious Pastimes Archery group for anyone who may be interested in joining or if you have any questions about archery at Curious Pastimes. http://www.facebook.com/groups/1148630478492403/

Weapons Checking:

All weapons, shields and armour must be checked by a Weapons Checker before use to ensure they are safe.  Weapons checking will take place in camps before Time-In on Friday, and again before any skirmishes.

If an item is deemed to be unsafe or damaged, it is considered to have ‘failed’ a weapons check.  Failed weapons, arrows or armour will be marked with a red tag – these items must not be used in the game under any circumstances, and should ideally be stored in an out of character area for the remainder of the game.

Traders’ weapons will be checked prior to the event opening.

Arriving at Weston

Hey, we are delighted to share with you how to get to Weston for E3. Please do read this, specifically the part about the entrance to use, so we can get you all on site as quickly and easily as possible.

*** Directions to site and the gate to use

We are fortunate enough to have a dedicated site entrance, so please be aware that you will not be able to access the event through the main Weston Park entrance that most sat navs will take you to. As such, when arriving at Weston Park please use the Shrewsbury Gates entrance onto Shrewsbury Drive (a road on the site) as described below.

The main Weston Park postcode (TF11 8LE, which you will also get if you type “Weston Park” into something like Google Maps) will take you to the main Weston Park entrance gates. Using “A5, Weston-under-Lizard, Shifnal TF11 8JS” in google maps will take you pretty much to the junction where the gate entrance is. Please see the map attached to this post that shows the gate we are using (the star on the map) and the entrances to avoid.

Alternatively you can use either of the below methods to get there too:

What3Words: ///willing.recount.merely (For the correct entrance.)

GPS Coordinates are: 52.695356,-2.301116

Lon/Lat are: 52°41’43.3″N 2°18’04.0″W

*** Upon arrival

Please follow the signposted road for approximately 1 mile. Check-ins will be done at the Front Gate Tent, located near the Out of Character camping field. The Event Team will then direct you further depending on whether you need to access the In Character or Out of Character camping areas, and will then show you where to park in the main car parking field. Please be aware that no vehicles are allowed onto the Out of Character camping field, although the areas you can unload from run right alongside this field.

Whilst the site has excellent drainage and we do not foresee any issues, if the weather is particularly bad and we have to limit vehicle access to the In Character field, we will be organising shuttle runs from the nearest hardstanding to drop off player kit.

If you are arriving after Time In on Friday and have any kit to unload for the In Character area we should, weather permitting, have an unloading area approximately 100m from the edge of the main field to minimise the distance to the game area.

We look forward to welcoming you all in a few weeks! Please drive safely.
