Below is Rules Review Update from Kayleigh, Head of Game
Rules Review Update: Long story Long!
First, a bit of honesty. I shared a post after Renewal and then had a big dose of real life hit, which meant I didn’t have the time or energy to do anything CuPa-related. The delay in sharing feedback and getting the review moving has been entirely on me. Thank you for your patience while I reset and got back to a place where I could look at this properly.
What the Feedback Tells Us:
We’ve had a full year of the new rules in live play, and the feedback has been invaluable. Since launch, we received 1,648 pieces of feedback. Every single line has been reviewed and categorised.
At a high level, 40% of feedback relates to typos, duplication, inconsistencies, and layout in the Rules Wiki. Some language is overly complex, and too much flavour text makes it hard to find core rules. Search functionality is clunky.
The rest clusters into clear themes that we’ll be discussing in the workshops:
1. Archetype Balance – particularly Creator feedback around crafting granularity and collaboration, plus Warrior/Scout ability usage and “per day” tracking
2. Research – signposting possibilities, example research paths, and clarity on XP reservation
3. Rites – clarity on requirements, stacking, and by-products
4. Resources – conversion processes, by-products, and climate mechanics interaction with expiry
5. Processes & Volunteer Load – queue times, unclear processes, and increased referee intervention needs
6. Calls, Effects & Resistances – too many calls creating noise, stacking rules, crowd control options
7. Retirement / XP – incentives and allocation timing
Important Note:
These are the topics we’ll be discussing in the workshops. This doesn’t mean everything will change – we’ll work through what’s working, what isn’t, and what solutions might look like before deciding on any updates. Some areas may need significant changes, others might need clarification rather than rule changes, and some may work better than the feedback suggests once we dig into them.
Scope:
These themes represent issues that have come up repeatedly across different players and factions. If something you expected to see isn’t listed, it might be in the data but has only come in once or twice.
Feedback remains open via curiouspastimesgameteam@gmail.com or the feedback form on the wiki. We will be reviewing feedback annually after each main event season (September). If not actioned in this review cycle, feedback will be considered in the next annual review.
Next Steps:
Drop-in Zoom sessions running throughout January and February
Each session focuses on specific themes with key questions to work through
Links and agendas will be shared once dates are confirmed
Wiki language and accessibility review runs alongside the workshops
How to Get Involved:
Watch out for the workshop events and join the discussion! Additionally we are looking for support in reviewing the language and layout of the wiki – please email curiouspastimesgameteam@gmail.com if this is of interest.
Finally:
This update covers rules mechanics only. Please be assured I have heard the feedback on other areas of the game – monstering, battles, admin… and we are looking at these topics separately.
Thanks for your patience. For those celebrating, have a great Christmas and see you in the new year!
